Fumbles have always been an issue for Ekeler, but at his peak with the Chargers he was such an incomparable overall threat from scrimmage that it made the fumbles tolerable. Ekeler remained an effective per-play threat from scrimmage in 2024, his age-29 season and first with Washington, but his four fumbles on 146 touches from scrimmage (including playoffs) is probably not an acceptable figure. As much as Ekeler proved he remains a uniquely dangerous pass catcher in particular - his eight-catch, 89-yard game against Philadelphia in Week 11 showed that part of Ekeler's game remains intact - fumbling at the rate he did in 2024 is still a good way to lose playing time. Starter Brian Robinson and 2024 RB3 Jeremy McNichols are both capable of catching more passes if Ekeler's fumbling puts offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury in a difficult spot in 2025. If Ekeler stops dropping the ball then he otherwise could have considerable fantasy utility even in a split backfield - Washington figures to have one of the league's better offenses, and Ekeler can be an important part of that if improved ball security allows his rare receiving ability to headline the story.
