Williams is returning to the Chargers on a one-year, $3 million contract after his one-year sojourn to New York and Pittsburgh. Now 30 years old, he'll need to battle for playing time this summer, although he's at least in good shape for a roster spot thanks to a $3 million guarantee. There's also some chance Williams improves on his 2024 form, considering last season was his first year back from a 2023 ACL tear that marked the end of his seven-year sting with the Chargers. He caught only 21 passes in 18 regular-season games for the Jets and Steelers last year, making five starts and scoring one touchdown. The return to Los Angeles means Williams will compete with Quentin Johnston and rookie second-round pick Tre Harris for perimeter snaps in an offense where Ladd McConkey is the clear No. 1 target for QB Justin Herbert and running-game-focused coordinator Greg Roman. It's not a great situation to pile up targets even if Williams wins a starting job.
