Hurst was part of the Chargers' offseason tight end overhaul that saw Gerald Everett leave in free agency while Hurst and Will Dissly were brought in. The Chargers also parted ways with wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, so there could be more targets from star quarterback Justin Herbert to go around for the team's tight ends. Hurst had 571 yards and six touchdowns with Atlanta in 2020, but he hasn't exceeded 414 yards or three TDs in any of his other five NFL campaigns. He had just 184 yards with the Panthers in 2023 before missing the final eight games due to a concussion, but the 6-foot-4 tight end cleared the NFL's five-step concussion protocol in January prior to signing with the Chargers in March.
