“New #Patriots QB Cam Newton is in New England to complete his physical & finalize his 1-year, $1.75M contract that’s worth up to $7.5M. The team is confident in his condition & no issues at all are anticipated on his physical. It’ll take a few days to complete, but this is a go.”
Does anyone understand why teams can go over the salary cap to pay incentives? Pats have under $1M left in cap but they can pay Cam an extra $5.75M if he gets everything in his contract.
Cam is a late round steal
Cam got signed to replace James develin don’t be fooled
He won’t have to throw the ball longer than 20 yards in their offensive scheme
@Appa if they end up needing to pay Cam incentives then they will have to restructure someone else’s contract to make the room. They don’t have the room currently but will make it if they need to.
You shouldn't be able to promise money that you have to find later lol maybe that's an unpopular opinion, but no team should be able to do that. Makes sense will Bill though, he can find a loophole in any NFL rule.
@Appa 🤷🏻♂️ as long as the check clears when it’s due it’s no problem- and the check isn’t due yet. It’s the salary cap equivalent of multiple spinning plates in the air
What if he gets hurt week 1 and doesn’t end up being owed any incentives?
That's true, but what if you get to week 17 and owe him all of the incentives?
I don’t really know the specifics of his contract, but I would guess they are awarded periodically throughout the season, so it doesn’t come all at once. I would have to read up on it, but that’s a really good question!
I’d be willing to bet the patriots clear some more cap space before training camp
Smart move by Bill. Low risk high reward signing
@EKBaller preach it
@ChiefKing if he’s even a fraction of his former mobility that’s an upgrade. In New England we would get up out of our seats and cheer when Tom Brady lumbered for 6 yards instead of just falling forward for 2. This really opens up the offense
It was a smart move, I just feel like teams shouldn't be able to get around the salary cap by throwing in incentives.
@Appa I feel that, but in a way they have too, it’s like a normal job. You perform well you get bonuses and if you are average or worse you get closer to the base pay. I do think they need to find a way to “estimate” it for cap, maybe go as if he got half max value?
I totally understand what you mean though.... like could we sign clowney on the lions for like 2 mil a year with a 13 mil bonus? 😂
@dbarz I just learned from reading about this that they have two types. Something called LTBE which means ‘likely to be earned’ bonuses and another which I guess has all the others. You and @Appa are right though, of course it’s the Pats spending cap they don’t have to get ahead 😆
Since the actual contract details haven’t leaked yet we don’t really know what the specifics are
@ndev0 that's interesting. Good to know.
@dbarz that would honestly be hilarious if a team in one offseason signed a few players to 1 year small deals with a bunch of bonuses they could get lol
Cams.too focused on his self image. I don't think hes gonna excel at New England
@CliffDickelthe3rd idk it depends how much of a competitor he is imo. If he’s as competitive as I think, being cut and signed low is gonna fuel his fire, however I do have my concerns about it. Although I’m prolly not drafting him and im not a pats fan. As someone who like Cam I hope he does well, but who cares honestly lmao
Cam has motivation don’t count him out just yet
