He should have at least heard it hit the ground or, based on how the catcher caught it, it should have been obvious.

That’s an easy call to see from 2nd base. But one thing is certain, anyone here clowning on people saying they don’t know the game, is a 🤡

On top of that he’s responsible for the runner on first advancing. So when a ball gets in the dirt, his job is to make a call at 2B if needed. his attention will naturally go to see if the runner is advancing.

I am in no way defending umps here just being fair and giving an unbiased assessment of the entire situation. Out of control is a fair statement but really does not apply here.
